Differences Between Magnetic and Non Magnetic Whiteboards

Whiteboards are simple things. They are white, laminated, and you can wipe what you write right off them with ease. Just these qualities make the humble whiteboard an accessory that is of utmost importance in a classroom or in an office conference room. In fact, it is more likely than not that your office or class already has a whiteboard.

Dry wipe boards as they are also called don’t have many downsides. They are easy to clean and maintain, nothing really sticks to them, so a simple wipe down will clear out any dirt or grime. In a pinch, they can even be used as a makeshift projection screen. For the most part, they are also not too heavy and can be easily shifted. It being as simple as it is, it has  however stunted chances of any major innovation. Anything added to a whiteboard automatically transforms itself into a whole other device. Smart whiteboards, for example, have complicated electronics embedded in them and is a whole other system.

Magnetic whiteboards

The only subtle change that actually make whiteboards better are to make them magnetic. Magnetic whiteboards are no different from traditional whiteboards. They have the same laminate and white surface that does not adhere to most things and can be wiped out with a dry rag and reused infinitely. There is zero difference in the way whiteboard markers will function on magnetic whiteboards.

The only real difference is that presentation accessories work better with magnetic boards. Magnetic boards are not inherently magnetic in the sense that they will not attract metallic substances towards them. A magnetic whiteboard will, however make it possible for you to place magnetic accessories on the board. You can place markers, arrows, highlights, and even place sheets and flip boards. It makes it easy to present, especially if it is going to be used as a notice board or as an information board.

Traditional whiteboards are normally made on either MDF backing boards or a plastic sheets placed on MDF. Magnetic boards have the whiteboard laminate on a sheet of metal which is then affixed to the MDF. They are slightly heavier owing to the steel, but this ultimately makes them last longer because of the steel. They also do not break and chip off the edges like the non magnetic boards after a few years.

Which one should you buy?

It depends on what kind of audience you are speaking to and whether or not you will need to move the board around. If you do not move the board too much, and have no need for magnetic accessories, go for the non magnetic ones. They are also cheaper.

If however, you need your boards to last you a long time and want it to be future proof, get a magnetic board. There are variations of magnetic boards in the market. If you want one that practically lasts forever, look into the vitreous enamel boards, they come with warranties that sometimes extend for up to 20 years.
